Life can change in an instant, and often when you least expect it. For many of us, health emergencies serve as a wake-up call, urging us to take a closer look at our health, lifestyle, and financial responsibilities. We also begin to realise that these episodes don’t just affect us, they also affect our family and friends. For Singaporean actor and director Tay Ping Hui, two health incidents have significantly shaped his perspective on health insurance. From his father’s ruptured appendix to a freak accident on set, Ping Hui learned first-hand the critical role insurance plays in health emergencies. Thankfully, they had the right coverage, at the right time.

The Initial Health Scare — His Father’s Burst Appendix

Ping Hui’s journey with health insurance began when his father faced a burst appendix. What started off as endurable pain quickly escalated into a serious situation. “It was appendicitis, and his appendix had ruptured,” Ping Hui recalled.

If it wasn’t treated immediately, the consequences could have been dire. A ruptured appendix can lead to sepsis, which is life-threatening.

Appendicitis

His father was rushed to a private hospital for emergency surgery. Despite it being the weekend—a time when hospitals are often busier—the family received prompt medical attention. “He ended up needing two surgeries because the first one didn’t manage to clean the area thoroughly, and he was still having a low-grade fever for almost a week. Thankfully, the second operation ensured everything was taken care of thanks to his Integrated Shield Plan.”

The swift response of the medical team saved his father’s life, serving as a wake-up call for Ping Hui.

This was the moment I began to take my insurance more seriously

A Freak Accident on Set – Crushed Finger

Not long after his father’s health episode, Ping Hui had his own brush with a medical emergency. While filming, he accidentally slammed the door of a classic car shut on his finger, severely injuring it.

The nail bed was damaged, and my internal nail popped out. It was incredibly painful, but we were still filming so I had to keep acting.

The first hospital Ping Hui went to was experiencing a high influx of patients. After waiting and wanting a second opinion on treatment, Ping Hui decided to seek help at a private hospital where treatment was covered under his Personal Accident Plan.

“They handled my finger with great finesse. They removed my nail, repaired the nail bed, and replaced it so that a new nail could grow in. Now, my finger looks as good as new.”

The Importance of Health Insurance

Both incidents highlighted to Ping Hui the importance of having the right insurance coverage. “When my father was rushed to the hospital, we weren’t worried about the costs because we knew we were covered. It was the same when I injured my finger. Thanks to our insurance, we could access treatment at private hospitals without hesitation.” While Ping Hui had basic insurance during his younger years, his father’s health scare prompted him to re-evaluate and expand his coverage. “I started with minimal coverage during my army days. After what happened to my father, I realised how crucial it is to be fully covered. So I rebalanced my plans to ensure I had the trinity of insurance – Integrated Shield Plan, Personal Accident Plan, and Critical Illness Plan. With these plans in place, it’s also important to know what you are covered for.”

Insurance isn’t just for peace of mind—it can be a lifesaver.

Navigating the Insurance Process

Ping Hui found the insurance process straightforward, particularly when it came to claims and approvals. Despite the high costs of weekend hospital care, his father’s treatment was fully covered. “There weren’t any financial worries. We knew we had the coverage to handle whatever came our way.”

The experience taught Ping Hui that knowing your coverage is key.

If you know what your insurance covers, you have options. If you don’t, you’re stuck.

His advice to others is simple: “Relook at your policies every few years, and see what needs rebalancing or upgrading. Don’t just rely on your agent—understand what you’re paying for and what you’re entitled to.”

Lessons Learned and Experiences Gained

Reflecting on his experiences, Ping Hui emphasised the importance of insuring yourself to the best of your ability. “Affordability is subjective. But within your means, make sure you’re getting the best coverage possible. You never know when you’ll need it.”

His father’s ruptured appendix and his own injury on set were stark reminders of how fragile life can be. “We usually buy insurance ‘just in case,’ but it’s only when something happens that we realise its true value. Insurance isn’t something to take lightly—it can make all the difference when it matters most.”

In the end, Ping Hui’s story is a testament to the strength of Singapore’s healthcare system and the critical role health insurance plays in safeguarding lives. His advice to others is clear: know your coverage, update it regularly, and never underestimate the importance of being insured.

Key Insurance Types

Integrated Shield Plan: An Integrated Shield Plan covers inpatient treatment and hospitalisation costs.

Personal Accident Plan: A Personal Accident Plan covers accident-related expenses, including outpatient treatment.

Critical Illness Plan: A Critical Illness Plan provides a lump sum payout upon critical illness diagnosis, which can be used to cover non-insurable expenses like off-list drugs.
