What is an Integrated Shield Plan?

Integrated Shield Plan (IP) is a combination of MediShield Life (provided by the Central Provident Fund or CPF) and your Hospitalisation Plan that you obtain from a private insurer. Integrated Shield Plans provide additional benefits and higher claim limits for hospitalisation and surgical expenses.

Key Terms of Integrated Shield Plans

The amount you pay for the insurance coverage, which varies based on age, and the specific plan chosen. The premium of the MediShield Life portion of your Integrated Shield Plan is fully payable by MediSave. The premium for the private insurance component can also be paid by MediSave but only up to Medisave Withdrawal Limit based on Age Band : $300 per year for those aged 40 years and below on their next birthday; $600 per year for those aged 41 to 70 on their next birthday; and $900 per year for those aged 71 and above on their next birthday. Any premium in excess of the Withdrawal Limit will then need to be paid via cash.

Deductibles are the fixed amount of the bill that you need to pay before your coverage kicks in. Deductibles are determined based on the ward/hospital that you stay in. For example, if you have a deductible of $3,500 and incur a $10,000 bill, you pay the first $3,500. If your bill is less than the deductible, you have to pay the full bill. For example, if you have a deductible of $3,500 and your bill is $2,500, you will have to pay the full bill of $2,500.

Co-insurance is the amount you have to co-pay with your insurer after you have paid the deductible for your hospital bill. It is usually a percentage of the hospital bill (after deductibles). This is applicable if you do not have a rider. In Singapore, the co-insurance is usually 10-20% of your hospital bill after deductibles.

Co-payment is only applicable if you have a rider. In Singapore, co-payment is a percentage (typically ranging between 5% and 10% of the hospital bill), depending on your plan and any “co-payment rider” options you may have, that you will have to pay.

Riders are optional add-ons to your IP that provide further coverage for specific needs, reducing your deductibles and co-payment. There are also cancer-specific riders that offer higher coverage for cancer treatment.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MediShield Life and Integrated Shield Plan?

MediShield Life is compulsory health insurance provided by CPF. It covers hospital bills for Class B2/C wards in public hospitals and selected outpatient treatments.

An Integrated Shield Plan (IP) is a private insurance plan that builds on MediShield Life, offering broader coverage for private hospitals or higher-class wards (A/B1) in public hospitals. IPs cover more treatments, have higher claim limits, and offer faster access to care, but come with higher premiums, partly payable by cash.

Can MediSave be used to pay for Integrated Shield Plans?

Yes. The premium of the MediShield Life portion of your Integrated Shield Plan is fully payable by MediSave. The premium for the private insurance component can also be paid by MediSave but only up to a certain amount — $300 per year for those aged 40 years and below on their next birthday, $600 per year for those aged 41 to 70 on their next birthday, and $900 per year for those aged 71 and above on their next birthday. Any excess must be paid via cash or credit card.

Can Integrated Shield Plans be used for both public and private hospitals?

Yes, Integrated Shield Plans (IPs) in Singapore can be used for both public and private hospitals. The basic MediShield Life component of the IP covers treatments in public hospitals, such as Class B2 or C wards. However, the additional private insurance component of an IP extends coverage options for Class A or B1 wards in public hospitals or even private hospitals.
