What is MediShield Life?
MediShield Life is a compulsory basic health insurance plan provided by the Central Provident Fund (CPF), Singapore. It covers all Singaporeans and Permanent Residents and provides some coverage for large hospital bills and selected outpatient treatments.
Key terms of MediShield Life
MediShield Life premiums are determined based on age and can be paid using CPF MediSave savings. There are also government subsidies (such as Pioneer Generation subsidies, Merdeka Generation subsidies) available to make Premiums more affordable for low-income individuals and the elderly.
Under MediShield Life, your deductible amount varies based on your age and ward class. Deductibles are the initial amount of the bill that patients need to pay before MediShield Life coverage kicks in.
Co-insurance rates take on a tiered structure ranging from 3-10%, making larger out-patient bills more affordable.
How does MediShield Life work?
| Hospitalisation | Claims Process |
| When a patient is hospitalised, MediShield Life helps to cover the hospital bills. While MediShield Life can be used for treatment in private hospitals, the claim limits are set based on charges in Class B2/C wards in public hospitals. This means that the coverage may be significantly less than the actual costs incurred in a private hospital. | Upon discharge, the hospital will process the claims automatically, reducing the patient’s out-of-pocket charges. |
| Total amount of coverage is subject to deductibles, co-insurance, and annual claim limit. |
Benefits of MediShield Life

Provides lifelong coverage for Singaporeans and PRs regardless of age, pre-existing conditions, and general health.

Pays for large hospital bills of Wards B2/C in public hospitals and selected outpatient treatments such as chemotherapy and dialysis.

No lifetime claim limit, which means there is no cap to the total amount of claims a person can make in their lifetime. However, there is an annual claim limit of $200,000.

Is MediShield Life enough?
MediShield Life provides coverage for Wards B2/C in public hospitals. However, it does not fully cover bills for Wards B1/A or private hospitals. Therefore, for adequate coverage in higher wards or private hospitals, individuals are advised to enhance their MediShield Life coverage.
