Life is full of unexpected challenges, and for Miao Ling, two significant health episodes involving her children put everything into perspective. Like many parents, she always prioritised her children’s well-being, but these moments of crisis deepened her understanding of the importance of health insurance.

Her Daughter’s Health Scare: Scoliosis and Spinal Fusion Surgery

It all began 13 years ago when Miao Ling’s daughter was diagnosed with scoliosis, a condition where the spine curves abnormally.

We found out during her spine curvature test in Primary 6.

At the time, the degree of curvature wasn’t too severe, but regular follow-ups revealed that her daughter’s condition was progressing.

The family faced an agonising decision: continue with conservative treatment using a back brace or proceed with surgery.

As parents, you always worry about your kids, and the idea of surgery was terrifying.

After extensive research, weighing their options, and consulting multiple doctors, the family decided that spinal fusion surgery was the best course of action. Miao Ling valued the ability to choose her preferred doctor for the surgery, so she opted to admit her daughter to a public hospital as a private patient. Now, five years after the procedure, the family is able to enjoy physical activities together without any limitations from the surgery.

Her Son’s Football Injury

Shortly before her daughter’s diagnosis, Miao Ling’s son had suffered a sports-related injury. One evening, he came home after playing football and complained about his arm.

He said it didn’t feel right, and I noticed his wrist was starting to swell.

A trip to the closest private hospital quickly confirmed that her son had fractured his wrist.

While these incidents were difficult emotionally, they also raised financial concerns, especially when it came to medical expenses.

The Role of Health Insurance

At the time of her daughter’s scoliosis surgery, Miao Ling and her family were not fully prepared from an insurance perspective.

We had an Integrated Shield Plan (IP) for hospitalisation but didn’t have a rider, so the out-of-pocket costs were significant.

For her son’s injury, they hadn’t yet purchased a Personal Accident Plan, leaving them responsible for all the medical expenses.

These incidents were a wake-up call. Miao Ling realised that while the family had basic insurance coverage, it wasn’t enough for unforeseen circumstances. “When it comes to your kids, you don’t want to worry about costs, but at that time, we weren’t fully covered,” she says.

Navigating the Insurance Process

One of the challenges Miao Ling faced during these health scares was understanding and navigating the insurance process. While her insurance agent handled most of the claims and approvals, the lack of comprehensive coverage made things more stressful.

I didn’t fully understand what we were covered for at the time, and that added to the worry.

Lessons Learned About Insurance

The experiences with her children taught Miao Ling valuable lessons about insurance coverage. “We were not adequately prepared, and that was an expensive lesson,” she says. Today, she ensures that her family is well-covered with a combination of Integrated Shield Plans + Rider, Personal Accident Plans, and Critical Illness coverage. She also encourages others to take a proactive approach to their insurance.

Health insurance is crucial because when something like this happens, the last thing you want to think about is money.

“It’s important to be covered, especially when it comes to your children. As parents, you want to support them emotionally and financially, and insurance can provide that peace of mind.”

Looking Back: What Would She Have Done Differently?

Reflecting on her journey, Miao Ling wishes she had been better prepared from the beginning. “I would have ensured we were fully covered before any health episodes happened,” she says. She also emphasises the importance of regularly reviewing and updating insurance policies, especially as life circumstances change.

Buy insurance early because when you need it, it’s too late.

She now shares this advice with friends and family, urging them to take action before an emergency arises.

Understanding the Singapore Healthcare System

Despite the financial strain during her children’s medical crises, Miao Ling is grateful for the quality of care her family received in Singapore’s healthcare system. “Both public and private hospitals provide excellent care,” she says. Her daughter’s follow-up appointments after surgery, which initially occurred every six months and then tapered to annual visits, were covered by her husband’s corporate insurance. This helped ease some of the financial burden post-surgery.

The Importance of Health Insurance in Retirement

As Miao Ling and her husband approach retirement, they are keenly aware that they can no longer rely solely on corporate insurance.

We need to be better prepared for the future, so we’ve added more coverage.

This includes ensuring they have adequate hospitalisation and critical illness coverage as they transition into retirement.

Final Advice: Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

Miao Ling’s story reminds us of life’s unpredictability and the importance of health insurance. “The last thing you want to worry about during a health crisis is money,” she says. Her advice is clear: understand your coverage, make sure it’s comprehensive, and regularly review it to ensure it meets your needs.

Insurance may seem like an unnecessary expense when you’re healthy, but it’s a lifesaver when something goes wrong.

For Miao Ling, the journey through her children’s health episodes has changed how she views health and financial preparedness. It’s a lesson she hopes others can learn from before they find themselves in a similar situation.
