When it comes to health, nothing prepares you for the moment when everything changes. For Ryan and his family, it started with a regular workday at home — until his spouse suddenly collapsed from abdominal pain. The diagnosis? Acute pancreatitis.

“We thought it was just stomach pain—until the ambulance came.”

This is their story — not just about recovery, but also about the critical importance of understanding your health insurance coverage before a health emergency strikes.

A Sudden Health Crisis at Home

It was a typical day for Ryan and his wife when suddenly, she began experiencing severe abdominal pain. At first, like many of us would do in the same situation, they tried to manage it with over-the-counter medication: paracetamol, gastric pills, warm water. For 6 agonising hours, they waited for the pain to subside, but it only got worse—she could barely move.

Unable to move her without triggering more pain, Ryan called for an ambulance. “We had to clear the walkways at home for the paramedics to carry her out on a stretcher,” he recalls. “Even then, the wait for the ambulance felt endless.” They had chosen a private hospital — Parkway East Hospital— for its proximity and because of prior experiences with long waits at restructured hospitals.

We needed help immediately, not hours later.

Within hours, she was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis and stabilised.

What is Acute Pancreatitis?

Neither Ryan nor his wife had ever heard of acute pancreatitis before her diagnosis. Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas — a small but vital organ that helps with digestion and blood sugar control.

When inflamed, the pancreas can start to “digest” itself, causing intense pain and sometimes serious complications like infections or even organ failure. Doctors explained that it could be triggered by things like gallstones, high fat levels in the blood, or certain medications. In Ryan’s wife’s case, the cause was still unclear — but the danger was very real. Hospitalisation was not just recommended, it was essential.

Why Private Insurance Made All the Difference

Thankfully, Ryan’s wife’s Integrated Shield Plan had coverage for private hospitals, which meant she could access immediate care at a private hospital — with significantly reduced out-of-pocket costs. She also had a rider which further reduced the cash portion of her hospital bill.

The difference in speed and attention between private and restructured hospitals was huge. We didn’t have to wait, and that made a big difference in her recovery — and our peace of mind.

Now, Ryan is an insurance agent, but he admitted that before entering the industry himself, he barely understood his own policies.

“I got my insurance a few years after I started working — I trusted the agent, but I didn’t fully understand what I bought,” he said. “It wasn’t until I joined the line that I truly understood the types of coverage we had, and what we were missing.”

Through his experience — and those of his loved ones — he learned how critical it is to understand what you’re covered for, and how much.

The Reality of Pre-existing Conditions

Pancreatitis wasn’t their only concern. Ryan’s wife already had a few pre-existing conditions, which meant getting new health insurance policies was no longer an option. “We had to live with whatever coverage she already had,” Ryan explains.

That’s why I always tell people — get insured early, before anything happens. Once a condition is diagnosed, your options become limited.

When the hospital bills came in, they were reminded just how important that early decision had been. “The bill was reduced drastically thanks to her Integrated Shield Plan. It was a huge relief not to have financial stress added on top of everything else.”

Navigating Health Insurance Claims

Fortunately, the claims process went smoothly. “Because it was e-filed, there wasn’t much paperwork or follow-up required,” Ryan explains. But he knows not everyone has the same experience.

Many people don’t realise what’s needed — from receipts and medical reports to pre-approvals. If anything is missing, your claim could get delayed or rejected.

This experience cemented Ryan’s belief that health insurance isn’t just about having a plan — it’s about truly understanding it. “That’s why I take time now to explain policy details to others — things like claim limits, exclusions, and the importance of panel doctors. It really does make a difference.”

What He Wishes More People Knew

The experience was a turning point for Ryan. “We were lucky,” he says. “Lucky that she had coverage. Lucky that we didn’t delay getting help.”

Today, he speaks openly to friends and family about reviewing their health insurance.

Don’t wait until someone gets sick. Understand your plan now. Know what hospital you can go to. Know what’s covered.

Ryan also learned the importance of being clear about which doctor or specialist is on your insurer’s panel. “It made the claiming process smoother,” he explains. “The last thing you want in an emergency is to be figuring that out.”

A Message to Other Young Families

For Ryan, health insurance is no longer just a checkbox. It’s a form of protection, not just for medical bills, but for peace of mind. “When your partner is lying in a hospital bed, the last thing you want to worry about is whether you can afford to help them get better,” he says.

His wife has since recovered, but the lessons remain.

We now review our policies every year. And we make sure both of us are covered adequately. It’s just something we do as a family now.

If you’re unsure what your current plan covers, start by checking your policy or speaking to your insurance advisor. The right coverage can make all the difference — when it matters most.
