When a Parent’s Worst Fear Becomes Reality

No parent wants to see their child in pain or discomfort. So, when Nigel Lee’s young daughter developed a fever, he and his wife stayed hopeful, believing it was just a minor illness that would pass in a few days.

Nigel had taken his daughter to the paediatrician in their neighbourhood when her fever first started. However, after 3 days, her fever persisted, refusing to subside, and her symptoms worsened – her lips began to bleed. That’s when their initial reassurance that it was just a minor illness, turned to fear.

Panic ensued and they realised that something was seriously wrong. Nigel and his wife bundled their daughter up and headed straight to the Accident & Emergency (A&E) department at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH).

A Diagnosis That Changed Everything

After a series of tests, Nigel’s daughter was eventually diagnosed with Kawasaki Disease, a rare but serious condition that causes inflammation in the blood vessels and can lead to long-term complications if left untreated. The diagnosis came as a shock to Nigel and his wife, but the medical team at KKH quickly initiated treatment to prevent any lasting damage to their daughter’s heart.

What is Kawasaki Disease?

Kawasaki Disease is a rare but serious condition that primarily affects children under the age of 5. It causes inflammation in the blood vessels throughout the body, including the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. The exact cause of Kawasaki Disease remains unknown, but it is believed to be linked to an abnormal immune response triggered by an infection.

Symptoms of Kawasaki Disease include:

  • Persistent high fever (lasting more than five days)
  • Red eyes
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Cracked lips (which may result in bleeding)
  • Swollen hands and feet
  • Rash

If Kawasaki Disease is left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as coronary artery aneurysms, which may increase the risk of heart disease later in life. Early detection and prompt treatment can significantly reduce the risk of long-term heart complications.

The Importance of Children Health Insurance

For Nigel, health insurance was never just about financial protection—it was about peace of mind for him and his loved ones. Having recently purchased a hospitalisation plan for his daughter just 1 to 2 weeks before her illness, he did not have to worry about the financial burden of her treatment, Nigel could focus solely on her treatment and recovery.

In my understanding, health insurance is not just about covering medical bills, but about lifting the stress of worrying about finances when all you want to focus on is your loved one’s health.

Knowing that his daughter’s Integrated Shield Plan would cover the necessary hospitalisation costs, Nigel was able to prioritise being by his daughter’s side as she underwent treatment without any financial anxiety

Understanding Your Health Insurance Coverage Before a Crisis

Thanks to his knowledge about the importance of health insurance, Nigel was proactive about ensuring his daughter had adequate coverage for higher-tier wards. Before he decided on and purchased a plan, he consulted his insurance advisor and compared different policies to find one that met his family’s needs. Because of this, when his daughter required treatment, he had no financial challenges—everything required for her care was covered by their selected Integrated Shield Plan.

While having a comprehensive Integrated Shield Plan is key, it is also important to have an insurance agent/advisor that you can trust. Nigel credits his insurance advisor for making the claims and approval process straightforward and stress-free.

My advisor handled everything—all I had to do was send the invoices.

How Insurance Allowed Access to Better Healthcare Options

Because Nigel’s daughter has comprehensive insurance coverage, it gave him the flexibility to choose the best available treatments and hospital stay for her. Without financial constraints weighing on their decisions, he and his wife could focus on what mattered most—getting their daughter the best care possible, regardless of where that would be (private or public hospital).

Lessons Learned: Always Be Prepared

Reflecting on his experience, Nigel is thankful that he was prepared, affirming his belief in being prepared for the unexpected. He advises parents and other individuals to:

  • Understand the different types of health insurance available, including Integrated Shield Plans (or Hospitalisation Plans), Personal Accident Plans, Critical Illness Plans (including early and late-stage coverage).
  • Compare policies carefully to ensure they meet individual and family needs.
  • Find a trustworthy insurance advisor who can provide guidance and assist with claims when needed.

For those unsure about their coverage, take the time to review your current policies, understand what each policy entitles you to (e.g. is it a claims-based or as-charged policy?) and ensure you and your loved ones are adequately covered before a health crisis strikes. With recent changes to Integrated Shield Plans (IPs) in Singapore, many people may not be fully aware of how their coverage has been impacted.

Final Thoughts: No Regrets, Only Gratitude

Looking back, Nigel has no regrets about how he handled his daughter’s health crisis. He acted swiftly, ensured she had the necessary medical attention, and had the foresight to secure health insurance before she fell ill. His experience reinforces the importance of planning ahead, so that when the unexpected happens, families can focus on what truly matters—their loved ones’ health and well-being.

Nigel’s story is a powerful reminder that health emergencies can strike at any time, and being financially prepared can make all the difference. If you haven’t already, check your health insurance coverage today to ensure you and your family are well protected when it matters most.
