Health scares have a way of putting life into perspective, and for actress Huang Biren, a medical episode brought home the true importance of health insurance and knowing what she was covered for. In a candid conversation, Biren opens up about the experience that led her to reevaluate her insurance coverage and reflect on the balance between health security and peace of mind.

A Routine Massage Led to An Unexpected Discovery

For Biren, the journey began in an unexpected place: a massage therapy session. “The masseuse mentioned she felt some unevenness in my body and suggested I get it checked out,” she recalls. This simple recommendation led her to her General Practitioner, who referred her to a gastroenterologist for further investigation.

The consultation quickly took an unexpected turn. What had initially seemed like a gastrointestinal issue was, in fact, related to her kidneys.

It turned out I had a 10 cm water cyst on my kidney, which I needed to remove.

The discovery wasn’t just concerning; it was also urgent. She was preparing for a filming schedule and had little time to spare. “The uncertainty about what was growing inside me made me worry—especially since my mind kept wandering to the possibility of cancer.”

Quick Action Enabled by Health Insurance Coverage

A crucial factor that eased Biren’s worries was her insurance. With her Integrated Shield Plan (IP), she knew she could access private healthcare and minimise wait times.

I chose Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital because I knew I could get treated quickly there. And thanks to my insurance, I didn’t have to worry about finances; I could just focus on my health.

Having insurance coverage meant that Biren could proceed with her surgery without hesitation. She stayed at the hospital for five days and, looking back, speaks fondly of her experience. “The care was incredible, and I enjoyed my stay so much. The beef stew was amazing; I almost didn’t want to leave!” she laughs, recalling the quality of service she received.

The Power of Peace of Mind

The security of insurance coverage brought Biren immense relief throughout her health journey. As a mother, she’s extended that sense of security to her children. “I have an Integrated Shield Plan, Personal Accident Plan, and Critical Illness coverage, and I made sure my kids are protected too,” she explains. For her children, who are active and prone to minor accidents, their Personal Accident (PA) coverage is indispensable.

Biren acknowledges that insurance isn’t just about having a policy; it’s about understanding its details and benefits.

If I ever need to check my coverage, I just call my agent.

Emphasising the value of a trusted advisor, her relationship with her agent has been essential to navigating the insurance landscape, particularly when filing claims. “The hospital handled most of the claims process for me, so I didn’t have to stress about it.”

Concerns Amid Changing Policies

While her experience with insurance has been largely positive, Biren isn’t without frustrations, especially concerning recent changes in the Integrated Shield Plan policies. “I bought my IP when I was young, so the premium was low. But now, with rising costs and added co-payments, I feel a bit let down” she admits. “I invested in my future health, and seeing these changes is disappointing. As we age, it’s only going to cost more.”

This perspective fuels her advocacy for proactive insurance management.

Insurance gives you peace of mind. You’re already worried about your health issue; you don’t want to add financial stress on top of that.

“Knowing you’re covered helps you focus on recovery,” she says, emphasising the importance of coverage, especially as medical expenses rise.

Advice for Others: Find Trustworthy Insurance Advisors

Reflecting on her journey, Biren advises others to prioritise their health coverage early on. “Get yourself covered and find a trustworthy agent,” she advises.

Don’t oversell yourself on insurance, but make sure you’re not under-covered either.

Her experience also serves as a reminder to regularly review and balance insurance policies, ensuring they’re suited to one’s current needs.

Final Reflections on Health and Financial Preparedness

The experience with her kidney cyst has reaffirmed Biren’s belief in the importance of health and financial preparedness.

Insurance is invaluable. When you’re dealing with health issues, knowing you’re covered financially lets you focus on what really matters: getting better. No one should have to choose between their health and their savings.

For Biren, her health journey has underscored a simple yet profound lesson: while we can’t always prevent health issues, we can be prepared. And for her, the peace of mind that comes from being insured is priceless.
